Templates and copying a job

Six templates that fill the wizard in, copying an existing job's settings, and duplicating a job from the list.

The wizard's first step has a Start from row. It fills in the later steps, so a common job needs only a name, a destination and a save.

The templates#

TemplateWhat it fills in
Blanknothing: you choose everything
Documents & DesktopDocuments and Desktop, Incremental, with the System files preset
Photos & videosPictures and Videos, Full
DeveloperDocuments, Differential, with the Developer junk, Version control internals and IDE & tool caches presets
Whole profileyour whole user folder, Incremental, with the System files and Media caches presets
Musicyour Music folder, Full
EmailOutlook's data files, in both places Outlook keeps them (%LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Outlook and Documents\Outlook Files, whichever this PC has), Incremental
Draft with Genieopens Ask Genie with Back up and the job's name already typed

Every template also turns on the Temporary files preset.

A template only fills in the steps. Everything it chose can be seen and changed before you save. The other settings, such as compression and retention, come from Settings ▸ Backup defaults.

Two notes:

  • Developer picks Differential, which is part of Home and Pro. On Free it picks Incremental instead. To back up your code as well as Documents, tick Code projects on the What step.
  • Email needs open-file support while Outlook is running; see Needs administrator: open files, VSS and three ways round it.

Copy settings from a job#

Next to the templates, Copy a job lists your jobs (Copy settings from a job…). Pick one and the new job starts with its sources, destination, settings, filters and schedule, named … (copy) unless you already typed a name.

  1. Pick the job to copy.
  2. Change the name.
  3. On the Where step, give the new job its own folder.
  4. If the job you copied is encrypted, the Settings step asks for a password: a copy does not take the password with it. Type one (the same or a new one).
  5. Save.

Duplicate from the Jobs page#

⋯ ▸ Duplicate on a row makes Name (copy) with the same sources, destination, settings, filters and schedule, and the toast says Created “Name (copy)” — paused until you edit it. The copy starts switched off, because two jobs on one schedule writing to one folder is never what you want.

  1. Click Edit on the new row.
  2. Give it its own name and destination, and save.
  3. Switch it On.

The copy has no runs and no sets; its first run is a full. Duplicate is also in the bar that appears when you tick several rows.
