Editing a job

Change any part of a job at any time: which changes start a new full backup, renaming, turning a job off, and drafts.

Updated
On this page

Nothing about a job is fixed. Edit on the Jobs page, Edit on the job's own page, or a double-click on its row opens the same five-step wizard with everything filled in. Click any step to go straight to it. The footer says Save changes and Save and run now.

What the next run does after a change#

You changeThe next run
The destinationa full backup, because the new place has no sets to build on. If the new folder already holds this job's sets, copied there by you, it builds on them instead; see Moving your backups to a bigger drive.
The sources: a folder addedbacks up the added folder in full; the rest carries on from the last set
The sources: a folder removedleaves it out; its earlier backups stay in the earlier sets
Encryption switched on or off, or a new passworda full that starts a new chain, so each restore point needs one password
The typeuses the new type; an incremental builds on the newest set, a differential on the newest full
The schedule, retention, compression, filters or notificationscarries on as before

While you edit, the job summary on the left says what the next run does: Folders you added are backed up in full on the next run.

The sets already on the old destination stay where they are and stay restorable: Restore and Find still list them. The job no longer applies retention to them.

Switching to a mirror#

The Settings step warns: Switching to a mirror removes this job's earlier restore points once its next run completes. Read The four backup types first.

Encryption#

Turning encryption on for a job that has sets leaves those sets unencrypted; new ones are encrypted with the password you set. Changing the password leaves older sets on the old password. The first backup after either change is a full, and the Settings step says so when you make it.

Renaming#

  1. On the Jobs page open the job's ⋯ menu and choose Rename….
  2. Type the new name and click Rename.

Existing backups keep their folder names; new runs use the new name. The job's chain carries on across the rename, and its older sets stay restorable under the job.

Turning a job off#

Click the job's On switch. While it is off:

  • its schedule does not fire and nothing is deleted;
  • Run on its row, and Run now at the top of its page, are greyed out; ⋯ ▸ Run now still runs it once;
  • Home does not count it as needing attention for being off or overdue.

Switch it back on and it carries on. On Free, only two jobs can be on at a time.

Drafts#

Close the wizard with unsaved changes and it asks Keep this draft?

  • Keep draft: the draft waits at the top of the Jobs page, A backup you started · Stopped at step 3, with Carry on and Discard.
  • Discard: the changes are dropped.
