Windows SmartScreen on a new download

Why Windows protected your PC can appear for a freshly published installer, how to check the file is signed by Genie9, and how to go on.

On this page

Windows shows Windows protected your PC for installers it has not yet seen many people run. It is about reputation, not about anything wrong with the file: a GBM AI version published this week can show it for its first days.

Check it is from Genie9#

  1. Right-click the downloaded file ▸ Properties ▸ Digital Signatures.
  2. The signer is Genie9 LTD (Genie9 Ltd, London). Select it and click Details: This digital signature is OK.

If there is no Digital Signatures tab, or the signer is anyone else, delete the file and download it again from the download page only.

Go on#

  1. On the SmartScreen notice, click More info. The publisher shows as Genie9 LTD.
  2. Click Run anyway.
  3. Approve the administrator prompt, and Setup starts.

Why it happens#

SmartScreen weighs how many PCs have run a file, for how long, without trouble. A new version has little history yet. Every GBM AI installer and update is signed with Genie9's code-signing certificate, which is what the check above confirms. Updates installed from inside the app are also checked against the published checksum and that signature before they run.
