The notification-area icon, opening the window at sign-in, language and theme, what Ask Genie may see, and the window.

Settings ▸ General is about the app itself. Nothing on this page changes what a job backs up.

SettingDefaultWhat it does
Show GBM AI in the notification areaonThe icon shows a running backup's progress. Right-click it to back up now, pause a backup or pause scheduled backups without opening the window.
Open the window when I sign inoffOff: only the icon starts when you sign in to Windows. While no backup is set up yet, the window opens anyway.

Under them the page says: Backups run in the background whether the window is open or not. Closing the window closes the app; the icon stays. Backups run whether the icon is shown or not. The background agent does the work, not the window.

Appearance#

  • Language: System, or one of the 18 languages the app speaks, each shown in its own name. It changes at once. Windows notifications and emails from the background agent follow it too, even while the window is closed. On System, the app uses the language Windows uses.
  • Theme: Light, Dark or System.

Both are also in the account menu at the bottom of the rail.

Ask Genie#

Let Genie see the names of top-level folders on internal drives (on).

  • On: when you send a prompt, Genie also gets the names of the top-level folders on your internal drives, such as D:\Projects, each with how many items it holds and a hint of what it contains (photos, code, documents). Genie can then suggest a real folder instead of guessing.
  • Off: Genie gets your drives only (letter, label, kind, role, size and free space), not their folder names.

Either way, nothing below the top level and nothing from USB, network or cloud drives is sent, and never a file's contents, a password or a key. The full list is in What is sent to Genie, and what never is.

Window#

  • Remember window size and position (on). Off: the window always opens centred at the default size. On: it opens where you left it, unless that screen is no longer connected. Then it opens centred on the main screen.
  • First day of the week: System, Monday or Sunday. The weekly day picker in the wizard starts on it.

Reset this page#

Every settings page except About has ⋯ ▸ Reset this page. It puts the fields on that page back to their defaults, the Ask Genie switch included on this page, and asks first. Jobs and backups are not touched.
